Scientists Find Cancer Cure, But Big Pharma Isn’t Interested

The drug dichloroacetate appears to target cancer cells, causing them to die. It’s potency as a cancer killing agent has been tested in tissue cultures and mice, with very promising results. However, clinical trials need to be run. Since the drug is not patentable and can be produced very cheaply, pharmaceutical companies won’t fund those trials.

Ted Stevens is a Moron…

It saddens me deeply to think that someone who has such an important roll in the future of the Internet has such a poor understanding of basic telecommunications concepts.

My favorite quote:

“Now we have a separate Department of Defense Internet now, did you know that?

Do you know why?

Because they have to have theirs delivered immediately. They can’t afford getting delayed by other people.”

That one is just too much. If you listen to the audio you can hear Senator Stevens struggling to put together a decent sentence. This is the same toolbag that refused to swear in oil executives at the post-Katrina gas price gouging hearing.

He ranks right up there with Sen. Orrin Hatch(R-Utah) in my book. Hatch is the guy who suggested that people who download copyright materials should have their computer automatically destroyed. Turns out, Sen. Hatch was using unlicensed software on his official website. Doh!

See, this is what happens when you have a congress with a 98.4% incumbency rate… Bill Nelson (D-FL) is not on my good list either: he happens to be a member of the Senate Commerce Committee, but has continually let me down on issues I care about.

If you want to hear Senator Stevens’ speech on “The Internets”, you can download it here.

Burrito Bride

Why, exactly, does it take so long for the wedding party to arrive at the reception? Well, I finally figured it out! The bride and groom get to sit in a private room and eat reception food before they make their grand entrance. I just happened to have my handy video camera to capture “the feeding”. Check it out…

The DVD War Against Consumers

The current crop of DVDs uses a copy protection scheme that encrypts the disk, but that scheme was broken several years ago and the hack was widely incorporated in innumerable freeware DVD decryption programs. The movie studios have vowed not to let that happen to them again.
